The Google Pixel 9a has a selfie camera problem

The brand new Google Pixel 9a faces a problem with the front-facing “selfie” camera.

Users on Reddit have been reporting that dark areas of the preview flicker grey, especially in lower-light environments. The good news is that this isn’t a hardware issue, so it isn’t the actual camera itself.

It’s annoying, but it isn’t as noticeable as other glitches on Pixel devices have been in the past. This seems to be the first reported glitch for many Pixel 9a owners who are just picking up their new device.

One reported fix for the issue has been to uninstall the latest update on the camera app, which narrows the issue to a software problem. To get specific, the update most likely throws off how the preview detects dark light, causing it to flicker. It likely won’t be a hard bug for Google to fix, as it only occurred in recent updates.

Google will most likely roll it out within the next update for the camera app, although I doubt it will be the high-priority issue listed on the update. After all, it is a minor (and annoying) issue that has only affected the Pixel 9a, not the mainline Pixel 9. According to the Reddit thread documenting this problem, some Pixel 8 users also suffered from this problem in the past with the camera app.
