Microsoft officially adds extensions to Edge for Android

Microsoft added extensions to its Edge web browser for Android devices, beating out the long-dominant Google Chrome browser in adding a feature that has been widely successful on desktop versions.

In early 2024, it was reported that Microsoft was working on bringing extensions to Edge for Android and that users had found it within the latest Canary build. It could only support two extensions at the time and was in a very early testing stage. One year later, it was officially released with over 20 extensions and more to come.

As spotted by Windows Latest, Microsoft added the web-based extension store to Android in the latest stable version of Edge (v134.0.3124.57). Supported extensions include Bitwarden for password management, Keepa for tracking prices on Amazon, and secure browsing services like NordVPN and Browsec.

It is still in the beta phase, and more extensions will likely be added down the line. Windows Latest speculates that Microsoft could use the extensions store to incorporate more features for Edge, as Microsoft was spotted in the latest Canary build testing a free VPN for users on the Edge Browser.

To access the extensions, users must open the browser’s menu and tap the ‘Extensions’ button. From there, they can install anything they like by tapping the ‘Get’ button.

Edge joins a small list of Android browsers currently supporting browser extensions, including the now-defunct Chromium-based Kiwi (notably, Kiwi’s extensions support was ported into Edge, so Kiwi is living on in a way) and Mozilla’s Firefox.

Now the ball is in Google’s court. Here’s hoping this spurs Google to add extensions to Chrome on Android.
