PECA Case in Peshawar Over Ramadan Moon Sighting Posts

PESHAWAR: Authorities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital have lodged a case under the PECA Act against an individual accused of posting offensive content on social media about religious scholars following the announcement of the Ramadan moon sighting.

The incident began when the zonal committee of the Ruet body in Bannu did not declare the sighting of the Ramadan moon, postponing the start of the holy month. In response, the accused shared a video and a series of posts online, using harsh language to criticize the scholars’ decision. The posts quickly gained attention, leading to a formal complaint by Maulana Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, who argued that the remarks were disrespectful and inflammatory.

Police responded promptly by filing a PECA case and launching an investigation. Officials have advised the public to exercise caution and refrain from making controversial statements on religious matters that could lead to legal consequences.

The Ruet body, led by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, confirmed that no credible reports of the moon sighting were received, resulting in the start of Ramadan on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
