Federal Judge Warns of ‘Serious Sanctions’ on FDIC Over Document Retention


The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia delivered a scathing reprimand to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. for its response to a Freedom of Information Act request and subsequent handling of documents in ongoing litigation concerning crypto-related banking activities, transcripts released this week show.

At the Jan. 22 hearing, U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes ordered the FDIC to comply with the FOIA request of the plaintiff, History Associates Inc., through Coinbase Inc. to release all the pause letters the agency sent to banks advising them to halt crypto-related services. However, the new FDIC leadership, under the Trump administration, released 175 documents Wednesday.
