By our count NASDAQ closed at its 21st new all-time high yesterday, September 8. This was its first new all-time high in September, adding another perspective to an already bullish scenario. At the end of August, NASDAQ had already logged 20 new all-time highs this year. A feat that had only been accomplished in 18 of the prior 54 years (since 1971).

Contrary to the opinion that new highs can be worrisome, NASDAQ’s performance and frequency of gains did improve during the September to December period when compared to all other years. All Years averaged 3.78% (up 68.5% of the time) from September to December compared to an average gain of 5.78% (up 72.2% of the time) when NASDAQ logged 20 or more new all-time highs by the end of August.

When NASDAQ also closed at a new all-time high in September its performance for the rest of the year improved even further with positive average monthly gains in September, October, November and December.
