SynopsisIndia’s SUV market experienced an unusual drop in June 2025, caused by increasing costs, shifting buyer interest to value-based options like the Maruti Dzire. The current range of SUVs is still seeing strong sales, such as the Creta; however, changing preferences are pushing buyers towards hybrids, sedans, and value-focused options.

Introduction

In June 2025, India’s SUV sector experienced its first decline in more than five years, at -2.1%. The Hyundai Creta still held the SUV crown, and then July hit, the Maruti Dzire in overall sales not only regained its footing, but surprisingly, it overtook the Creta. This article summarizes the top SUV performers and begins to highlight the change in consumer preferences.

Evolving Dynamics in the SUV Segment

While SUVs have dominated India’s automotive boom (accounting for more than 55% of passenger vehicle sales), elevated ride height, roomy interiors, and safety features have made SUVs aspirational products in even urban markets.

What Happened in 2025?

The 2.1% decline in SUVs sold in India in June 2025—the first retreat in 5 years—holds some remarkable implications. Prices of vehicles are soaring to new heights, interest rates are rising, and buyers may be getting price-fatigue, leading to a slowdown in urban demand. Buyers are moving toward hybrids, CNG vehicles, and compact EVs, which have lower running costs and better fuel economy. The market is further challenged with tech industry layoffs, rising inflation, and poor demand in the rural category. SUVs are still a popular vehicle segment, but the auto industry is no longer in a phase of seemingly automatic growth, and especially cautious buyers moving forward seem to be in search of value.

Top 5 SUVs in India

1. Hyundai Creta – 15,786 units

Continues to perform well, thanks to its premium styling, a variety of variants packed with features and a range of engines from petrol, diesel, to upcoming EV products. Popular among urban and Tier 2 buyers looking for a “value-loaded” SUV.

2. Maruti Suzuki Brezza – 14,507 units

Urban-focused with a refresh and a small CNG variant in a compact size. Appeals to young families who want a cost-effective car because of mileage, practicality and Maruti’s well-established service network.

3. Mahindra Scorpio & Scorpio N – 12,740

Heavy looking, diesel and rough road presence. Remaining a go-to car in rural and semi-urban areas, it remains popular with loyal users in non-metro markets.

4. Tata Nexon – 11,602 units

Regularly ranks a close 1 and is a compact SUV of choice for both first-time and repeat customers in the compact SUV  segment, thanks to a 5-star safety rating, tech features and affordability.

5. Tata Punch – 10,446 units

Once a top compact performer, it slipped as a viable option now with fierce competition from newer arrivals. Decreasing numbers suggest frugal buyers, value-minded buyers expect more features at the same price.

Maruti Dzire Tops July Sales, Outselling Hyundai Creta

Maruti Suzuki Dzire leapfrogged with July sales over the Hyundai Creta. Sold 20,895 units, that’s about 4,000 ahead of Creta, a rare win for sedans in a largely SUV market in India. Some of the key reasons are the Dzire’s fuel efficiency, the availability of CNG, and its popularity in tier-2 and tier-3 towns and cities. It appeals to customers focused on cost and practicality, especially when fuel prices are high.

Creta Still Dominates Overall

Despite the July sales, the Hyundai Creta is still the leader for the year 2025 with 117,458 units sold from January to July. It still remains the SUV of choice for consumers thanks to its features, performance, etc.

Conclusion

Despite the dominance of SUV sales, the rise of Dzire shows a shift toward value-driven choices. The future of India’s automobile segment looks less skewed—where EVs, hybrids and sedans have opportunities. Auto manufacturers will have to remain nimble and aligned with changing buyer preferences to remain relevant.
