Improved News / Headline Scan: Now with Fuzzy

[ad_1]

July 26, 2025

SwingTradeBot’s News Headlines Scan just got a major upgrade.  I’ve added a couple of news sources to the mix.  Unlike the previous headline-only sources, these contain either a summary or full-text of the article.  I also started using my database’s full-text query functionality.  Those two things allow for much better search results.  So you can now perform more flexible and/or “fuzzy” searches — making it easier to catch actionable headlines that don’t use exact match phrasing.

The new search functionality understands common web search conventions, including:

  • Quoted Phrases: “exact phrase” for matching an exact sequence of words.
  • Minus Sign: -word to exclude documents containing “word”.
  • OR Operator: word1 OR word2 for matching either “word1” or “word2”.
  • Implicit AND: Words not separated by operators are implicitly treated with an AND operator, meaning all words must be present.
  • Searches both title and article body

That means you can now find things like “FDA approval” even if the headline says something like “FDA gives green light”, or catch “secondary offerings” even if the headline just says something like “files to sell shares”.  In both of those cases those matches would be surfaced because the article bodies would contain enough similar words to the search term for the system to figure out they’re possible matches.

This enhancement is especially useful because headlines are often:
  • Reworded in creative or clickbait-style formats
  • Missing key terms you might expect
Now, with fuzzy search, you can cast a wider net without needing to guess the exact wording.

Some Search Term Ideas

To help you get started, here’s a categorized list of search terms that can surface actionable headlines. Each term links to a pre-filled scan:

Biotech & Pharma

Offerings & Capital Actions

Analyst Ratings & Earnings

M&A & Restructuring

Legal & Regulatory

SEC Filings & Insider Moves

Company News & PR

Buzz & Momentum

Market Triggers

Some Things to Keep in Mind

  • In some cases you may prefer to do an exact match on your search term / phrase.  To do so, just enclose your search term in double quotes.
  • The articles are now ranked by relevance.  So the articles toward the top of the list are more likely to match your intent than the ones lower in the list.
  • This kind of searching is “expensive” —  it’s taxing on the database and can slow the site down.  To minimize that, I’ve limited how far back you can search for articles.  Paying subscribers can search back one month & non-subscribers are limited to one week.

As always, feedback is welcome! Let me know what terms you’re scanning for.
