The United Steelworkers union (USW) says Rogers has continued to sidestep bargaining attempts made by Abbotsford, B.C., technicians on strike since June 19, 2025. The union accused the Toronto-based national telecom of being more focused on maintaining operations than on the concerns of its workers.
“We’re incredibly disappointed that Rogers would rather exploit a potential loophole in Canada’s new federal anti-scab legislation rather than negotiate in good faith,” said Michael Phillips, USW Local 1944 President.
Instead of responding to striking workers, Rogers has brought in out-of-province management staff to fill positions left vacant by the strike.
“The law was designed to protect workers’ right to strike and not to be undermined by companies bringing in managers from other regions,” Phillips said.
Phillips went on to say that workers in Abbotsford maintained essential services and were clear about what they wanted in a fair contract. Rogers’ decision to bring in outside management was “disrespecting both its workers and the spirit of the law.”
The USW is asking Rogers to return to the bargaining table. The USW says the strikes have been unjust and underhanded and risk further damaging the company’s reputation with customers and communities.
MobileSyrup has contacted Rogers to learn more about their decision to refuse to bargain with USW and bring in out-of-province workers.
