LG Electronics has reported progress towards its 2030 environmental targets in its 2024–2025 Sustainability Report, including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and improvements in resource circulation.
The report details that LG’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for 2024 totalled 910,000 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq), moving the company closer to its 2030 objective of 878,000 tons. This target, originally set as a 54.6% reduction from 2017 levels, has been brought within reach through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and carbon-reduction measures across production lines.
In 2024, LG also made progress in addressing Scope 3 emissions – those generated from product use and other indirect activities. The company reports a 19.4% reduction in product carbon emissions relative to 2020. The application of artificial intelligence and various energy-saving features in its products have contributed to this figure. Notably, LG was the first South Korean home appliance manufacturer to have its emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), covering a 20% cut in Scope 3 emissions for seven main product categories by 2030 using 2020 as a baseline.
Resource circulation
Waste recycling at LG’s production sites has surpassed its 2030 target early. In 2024, the company achieved a 97.4% recycling rate across its global sites, overcoming the original goal of 95%. The company also collected 532,630 tons of used electronics from 91 sites in 56 countries over the last year. Since 2006, the cumulative total has now exceeded 5 million tons of collected used electronics. The amount of recycled plastic incorporated into LG products increased by 36% year-over-year.
Product accessibility
The report includes measures to enhance accessibility in LG products and services. The LG Comfort Kit, designed to facilitate appliance use regardless of user age, gender or ability, now encompasses 14 products. LG OLED TVs have received additional accessibility capabilities, including screen reading and audio output for hearing aids and speakers. Other efforts include kiosks featuring height adjustment and tactile keypads. LG has ongoing inclusion initiatives providing services such as disability care programmes, sign language consultations, senior support, and in-store education on safety, information technology and culture.
Responsible management
LG continues to strengthen its approach to responsible management through a governance structure rooted in compliance and ethics. The company’s board of directors is guided by principles of independence, expertise and transparency, while its ESG Committee plays an expanding role in overseeing sustainability initiatives. In its supply chain, LG supports shared growth through third-party ESG audits aligned with Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) standards.
The company has also maintained its ranking in the “Top 1%” of S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for a second year. It has received an “A” grade from Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) for five consecutive years and has been recognised on the Dow Jones “Best-in-Class World Index” for 13 years in succession.
LG has published an annual sustainability report each year since 2006. The 2024–2025 edition provides a detailed overview of its environmental targets, progress, and ongoing strategies towards the year 2030.
