New Feature: SwingTradeBot Now Tracks Stock Gaps

[ad_1]

May 27, 2025

I’m excited to announce a powerful new addition to SwingTradeBot’s technical analysis toolkit: Gap Tracking! This new feature gives you detailed insights into price gaps for every stock (and ETF) in the market — helping you spot key setups like breakaway moves, exhaustion patterns, and potential gap fills.

What’s a Gap and Why Does It Matter?

A price gap occurs when a stock’s price opens significantly higher or lower than its previous closing price — often due to after-hours news, earnings, or market sentiment shifts. Gaps can reveal important psychological levels, support/resistance zones, and sometimes act as a catalyst for bigger moves. (Side note: In order to filter out insignificant gaps, SwingTradeBot has only ever tracked gaps that are at least 25% of a stock’s Average True Range. And frankly, I’m considering raising that threshold to 50%.)

Many traders watch gaps closely because:
  • Unfilled gaps often act like magnets, pulling price back toward them.
  • Gap fills can provide strong reversal or continuation signals.
  • The type of gap (breakaway, exhaustion, common, etc.) can hint at what’s likely to come next.

What SwingTradeBot Tracks

Since day one SwingTradeBot has generated end-of-day signals for gaps up and gaps down.  Starting today, it can also automatically track gaps and identify the type of gap for each stock every trading day. For every detected gap, the Bot stores:
  • Gap open date
  • Direction (Up or Down)
  • Gap size (both dollar and percent change)
  • How much of the gap has been filled, as of today
  • Type of gap, based on price and volume behavior
  • Status: Is it still open, almost filled, or completely closed?
Here’s a sneak peek at the new table on each stock’s detail page:

That section will only show a maximum of 5 gaps that are either still open (unfilled) or recently closed (filled).  To see all the tracked gaps you can click the “View All Gaps” button.

👀 Pro Tip: Gaps that are >90% filled are labeled “Almost Filled” to help you anticipate possible closures.

📬 What’s Next?

This is just step one of the gap tracking. Coming very soon:

  • Alerting when gaps close.
  • Screener filters for open gaps, almost filled gaps, and type of gap.

I hope this new feature helps you trade smarter and more confidently. As always, feedback is welcome!  Just leave a comment below.

Happy trading!
