Illinois Tax Amnesty is Coming!

Every once in a while Illinois (and other states) open a tax amnesty program. The amnesty program can be a great opportunity to clear tax debts owed to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Illinois will have an amnesty program available from October 1, 2025 – November 17, 2025.

Under the amnesty program, if you qualify and pay the full amount of tax owed, Illinois will forgive applicable penalties and interest. As anyone who has a tax liability knows, the penalties and interest can add up to be more than the total tax owed. The amnesty program can be a great opportunity to clear the balances for significantly less than the total amount owed.

The amnesty program is only available for tax periods ending after June 30, 2018, and before July 1, 2024. In other words, not all periods will be eligible for this amnesty program.

While specific directions are yet to be released, now is the time to start reviewing any balances owed to Illinois to see if the amnesty program could provide relief for you.
