Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner to play Lara Croft in Prime Video Tomb Raider series

Sophie Turner has been cast in the lead role of Lara Croft in Prime Video’s live-action Tomb Raider series.

Turner, who is best known for playing Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, was linked to the Tomb Raider series in November, but this marks an actual confirmation from Prime Video.

Turner will be the third person to play the video game icon in live-action, following Angelina Jolie, who starred in two early 2000s movies, and Alicia Vikander, who headlined the eponymous 2018 film.

Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series was created by Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as writer, co-showrunner and executive producer. Chad Hodge (Good Behavior) will also serve as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) has been tapped to direct and executive produce.

Amazon says the series will go into production on January 19, 2026, but a premiere window has not yet been confirmed. It’s also unclear which direction the series will take. For instance, the 2018 Vikander film was heavily based on the 2013 Tomb Raider game reboot, while the Jolie films, naturally, were more in line with the original Tomb Raider PlayStation titles. Of course, Waller-Bridge, who says she grew up with the games, could also opt to do a completely original take on Lara Croft.

Either way, it’s interesting to consider that we’ve heard more about adaptations of Tomb Raider in recent years than we have new games in the series. Besides this long-gestating Amazon series, Netflix released the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft last year, featuring Captain America‘s Hayley Atwell in the lead role. It’s already been renewed for a second season.

Meanwhile, the last mainline Tomb Raider game, Eidos Montreal’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider, launched in 2018. Since then, we’ve gotten a mobile title, some remasters, and a Dead by Daylight crossover, but we still haven’t seen anything from the next big game in the series. In 2022, Amazon signed a deal to publish the next mainline entry from lead developer Crystal Dynamics, but both parties have since been quiet about it.

It’s worth noting that next year is the 30th anniversary of the Tomb Raider series, so hopefully, we’ll get some news then.
