Apple's new 60W charger is ideal for iPhone 17 fast charging

The new iPhone 17 fast charging features can half-fill the battery in only 20 minutes. To do it, you need Apple’s new charger too.

Apple has been incrementally improving the charging on its smartphones for years. It’s trying to do so safely and intelligently.

It would be easy for Apple to produce a crazy fast charger. However, doing so would also result in additional heat, ultimately lowering battery health and its lifespan.

The new higher-wattage fast charge in the iPhone 17 is yet another improvement, but it has its own downside.

The iPhone 17 line all supports the latest USB Power Delivery specification. Its official title is USB PD 3.2.

A matching charger that also supports that standard is required to achieve these new higher speeds. Of course, Apple released a charger that does just that.

Apple’s Dynamic Power Supply can go up to 60W with iPhone 17 models

It’s called the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. This seems to be one of the first chargers to use USB PD 3.2 SPR AVS.

That name is unusual,but it makes sense. It is a 40W power adapter, but it can deliver up to 60W of output when required.

SPR standards for Standard Power Rate, while AVS stands for Adjustable Voltage Supply. While other chargers adjust in predefined voltage intervals, SPR AVS lets chargers adjust the voltage to the device in granular 100mV intervals.

What that means for your device is that it can be charged with precisely how much power it needs. This ultimately increases the speed and efficiency without waste or unnecessary heat.

This is how Apple is able to get that 50% charge of an iPhone 17 battery in only 20 minutes.

As part of the open USB Power Delivery spec, other accessory makers are certain to be launching their own matching power supplies. Right now, though, it appears the only way to get this quick charge capability is by buying Apple’s Dynamic 40W Power Adapter with 60W.
