AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra Review

AOSU is no stranger to me, as I’ve already reviewed the company’s security camera system earlier this year. Now, the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra is here, and it is yet another device that is not only affordable but also doesn’t require a subscription to use. AOSU is really doing a great job providing devices like this. Yes, there are some features that will require a subscription, but if you want the basics and nothing more. This doorbell and most of the AOSU lineup will do that without having to connect to a cloud service.

The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra has a nice-looking design that sticks to what most other doorbells are doing these days. The build quality is solid, and it is built to live outside, so I expect it to hold up well. The camera is 5 MP and it has excellent video quality, although night mode could use some improvement.

There are battery or hardwire options available, which are nice to have, and if you’re handy, you can take advantage of not having to recharge. Image quality is really great, though night results do vary, and I think they probably need to be improved.

The biggest selling point here is that the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra doesn’t require a subscription to use. There is local storage on the base unit, and that lines up with the company’s security cameras. For the price point, I think this system has a lot of value. Design

The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra has a simple design, and it looks like some other doorbells on the market. The front has the cameras, sensors, and doorbell. The back and sides are plain, and there is a USB-C port for charging. There is included hardware for mounting the unit to your wall.

The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra home base basically looks like a wall charger with two antennas. It has the storage built-in so you don’t need a subscription and can store events on it. This unit is a bit bulky, and, depending on your wall outlet setup, it may block one of your outlets from being used. I would have liked to see the homebase have an external outlet to passthrough to use the outlet for other things.

Not a huge deal, and most users are probably not going to encounter this issue, but just some feedback for the company to consider. Both units are fairly small, and they both look great. Overall, this is a straightforward design that looks like many other units on the market.

Setup and Ease of Use

Setup of the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra is straightforward. Everything is basically put together already. I will say, if you plan on hardwiring this unit into your existing doorbell. That might be a bit more involved, and make sure you turn the power off before doing it.

I elected to use it with battery power, and I charged it to full before installing it. The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra comes with a mount that I simply anchored to my siding, and then I placed the doorbell into the mount. That’s just about it. Once that’s in, you just plug the base station into an outlet somewhere in your house. The base station acts as the transmitter, storage media, and actual doorbell.

Once you have the hardware all set. Open the app, log in, and add the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra to your inventory. It will connect, and then you can jump into the app settings. The doorbell is simple to use and simple to set up. Most users should have no issue doing this.

App

As with the security system I already reviewed, the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra uses the same app and offers extensive customization options and features. In the primary settings menu, you can define motion detection zones, selecting or excluding specific areas within the camera’s view.

Notification settings are straightforward, delivering alerts to your phone triggered by detected events. This section also includes an anti-theft alarm feature, which emits a loud siren if someone attempts to tamper with the doorbell and simultaneously notifies you. I am not sure why anyone would want to steal a doorbell, but I guess it’s a thing.

The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra video quality and night vision settings let you disable the infrared LED if your installation area is sufficiently lit. UHD mode maximizes the camera’s 5MP resolution, while smooth mode reduces resolution to conserve battery life and enhance frame rate.

The Chime settings allow you to adjust the volume for both the doorbell and HomeBase, with three distinct tone options for each. Which is handy because the loud setting is freaking too loud.

The Battery menu provides a simple overview of the current battery level and an option to show the percentage on the app’s main interface. You can also set privacy zones in a dedicated menu to limit video coverage, ensuring your neighbors’ privacy. This is just about the same as the security camera settings. Overall, a pretty robust set of features for this price.

Performance

The AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra does exactly what it says it does: keeps an eye on your front door and notifies you when it rings or there is motion. The video quality of this 5 MP camera is actually very good, and it is excellent during day shots. The night mode could be better; it’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, but it could use some improvement.

The audio quality is not horrible, but that also could use a little improvement. I also know that this is a budget doorbell, so take that into account. The field of view can be adjusted for sensitivity, so if you have a lot of foot traffic around the area, you can adjust it for fewer false alarms. The battery is rechargeable, or you can hardwire it in. I haven’t had to recharge my unit just yet, and battery life is going to depend on how your sensitivity settings are set.

The overall performance of the AOSU Video Doorbell Ultra is excellent. While I do think it needs audio and night mode improvement. It’s not unusable, and you can hear and see everything that you need to. For me, one of the key features is being able to put it to sleep. My wife tends to like to sit on the front porch, and the doorbell picks her up constantly. Putting it to sleep helps when she’s out there.
