Welsh Azure User Group August 2025 Meet Up! – Cloud Computing with a side of Chipz

[ad_1]

The Welsh Azure User Group’s August virtual meetup was a whirlwind tour through the future of urban living, enterprise data, and—of course—the ever-popular community quiz. Hosted by the dynamic duo John and Matthew, the event welcomed a global audience (no Welsh passport required!) and kicked off with the usual housekeeping: be courteous, stay on mute, and remember, there are no silly questions—except maybe, “Can I win the quiz if I’m the host?”

Session 1: Building Smart Cities with Azure (Mayur Bhandari & Janak Bhalla)
Mayur and Janak took us on a journey to 2050, where 70% of the world’s population will be city dwellers, and Azure is the digital backbone keeping the lights on (literally). Highlights included:

  • Cloud Power: Azure’s elasticity and pay-as-you-go model mean cities can scale up for rush hour and scale down when everyone’s asleep—no more paying for servers that just sit there like unused gym memberships.
  • IoT at Scale: Azure IoT Hubs can handle 300 million messages per day per unit. That’s more messages than your family group chat during the holidays.
  • Real-World Impact: In Kansas City, Azure-powered analytics help adjust street lighting based on pedestrian traffic, proving that even lampposts can be smarter than the average commuter.
  • Emergency Response: Digital twins and AI optimize resource allocation, achieving 42.6% faster response times. If only they could help you find your keys that quickly.
  • Sustainability: Azure helps cities cut carbon emissions by nearly 29%. Barcelona’s smart lighting and waste management are leading the way—no word yet on whether Azure can help with the city’s football results.

Session 2: Enterprise Data Architecture & Compliance (Alka Soni)
Alka Soni brought her 18+ years of experience to the virtual stage, tackling the serious business of regulatory compliance with a smile (and a few acronyms). Key takeaways:

  • Zero Trust, All the Time: In Azure, nobody is trusted by default—not even your dog. Every access is authenticated and validated, making compliance a breeze (or at least less of a hurricane).
  • Data Lineage: Azure tracks your data’s every move, so you’ll always know where it’s been—unlike that missing Tupperware lid.
  • Industry Solutions: Whether you’re in banking, healthcare, or manufacturing, Azure’s got a compliance toolkit for you. HIPAA, GDPR, and even supply chain tracking are all in the mix.
  • Best Practices: Executive sponsorship, cloud centers of excellence, and proper tagging strategies are the secret sauce for compliance success. And yes, documentation is still important (sorry, developers).

The Infamous Quiz
No Welsh Azure meetup is complete without the legendary quiz, where the stakes are high (Amazon vouchers!) and the questions range from Azure’s Q4 growth to which classic computer just turned 40. Matthew’s custom quiz platform kept everyone on their toes—and occasionally scratching their heads. Congratulations to Neil for taking home the prize, and commiserations to everyone who realized they’re older than the Amiga.

Final Thoughts
Big thanks to the speakers, sponsors, and everyone who joined. Whether you came for the cloud, the compliance, or just the quiz, the Welsh Azure User Group delivered another evening of learning, laughs, and a little bit of friendly competition. Next session: TBC—watch this space, and maybe brush up on your Azure trivia in the meantime.

The evening went superbly and we had great engagement thank you to all that attended!
