Fujifilm Australia has confirmed that Michio ‘Mich’ Kondo will become the company’s new Chief Executive Officer in mid-2025, following the departure of Richie Matoba, who will transition to a new role at Fujifilm North America.

Michio Kondo will be based in Macquarie Park, Sydney, and take responsibility for overseeing Fujifilm’s operations throughout Australia and New Zealand. His appointment follows a period of leadership under Richie Matoba during which the company reported continued growth and several high-profile initiatives.

Leadership transition

Richie Matoba held the position of Chief Executive Officer at Fujifilm Australia for three years. During his time, the company undertook projects such as launching the House of Photography store in Sydney, and the installation of the first Aperto Lucent Open MRI machine outside Japan at Altus Medical Imaging in Gladesville, Sydney. These milestones were among several achievements highlighted by the organisation.

Matoba’s tenure also saw Fujifilm Australia initiate a marketing campaign centred on the world’s first printed memories and celebrate its 20th anniversary in Australia, which emphasised the company’s local heritage and contributions to the community.

Background and experience

Michio Kondo joins the Australian operations with significant international experience, having previously served as Managing Director at Fujifilm in Canada and Turkey – spending three years in each post – as well as leading Fujifilm Middle East Africa for six years. During these terms, he managed local subsidiaries and supported the development of multiple business divisions.

The company stated Kondo has contributed to the advancement of key areas such as the Medical Division, Photo Imaging Division, and Graphic Division across a range of markets including North America, the Middle East, and Africa. He was also involved in broadening the product portfolio following the integration of Hitachi’s Medical Division and played a role in launching the Office Printer Division.

Looking ahead

Alex King, Division Manager, Human Resources and Corporate Communications, said, “We’re incredibly grateful to Richie for his leadership and innovative thinking over the last three years. With Mich joining the team, we hope to continue innovating with customers and partners in the region, while supporting our community with new technology.”

In advance of his move to Australia, Michio Kondo stated his intention to familiarise himself with local teams and customers in the region. He commented enthusiastically on the company’s history and outlook.

In preparation for starting in Australia, Mr Kondo said “I’m excited to get to know the local team and customers in Australia. Fujifilm Australia has a strong history of innovation, and I’m looking forward to continuing this trend.”

Regional focus

Fujifilm Australia noted that it marked its twentieth anniversary in the previous year, reflecting on a long history of technical development and community engagement. The company outlined its focus on the group purpose of Giving our World More Smiles as central to its future activities and regional objectives.

Under Michio Kondo’s leadership, Fujifilm Australia will continue to manage a diverse product and solution portfolio in areas including imaging, medical equipment, and office technologies, aiming to maintain its presence in both established and emerging market segments in Australia and New Zealand.
