MDA Space to equip RCN Halifax-class frigates with six UASs

Canadian space technology company MDA Space has secured a C$39m ($28m) contract to provide uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) for the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) Halifax-class frigates.

The initiative is part of the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (ISTAR UAS) project aimed at bolstering the RCN’s capabilities in maritime threat detection.

MDA Space will supply two advanced UAS aircraft to RCN, with options for an additional four systems.

Additionally, there is an in-service support contract estimated at C$27m for a five-year period, which includes potential extensions for up to 20 years of sustainment services.

These advanced systems are expected to extend the RCN’s situational awareness and operational reach.

The RCN-ISTAR UAS will provide sailors with enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.

The initial operational capability is set for 2028 and full operational capability by 2032.

Until then, ISTAR data-gathering capabilities will be provided by the Halifax-class ship sensors and the CH-148 Cyclone (Maritime Helicopter).

MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley said: “As a long-time trusted mission partner to Canada, MDA Space is honoured to deliver these advanced uncrewed aircraft systems to the Royal Canadian Navy and to provide our sailors with the modern systems they need to meet their operational missions.

“The ISTAR UAS project is a clear example of the advanced innovation required to support the modern operational demands of the Canadian Armed Forces, and of deep domestic Canadian industrial capabilities available to help them achieve that mission.”

The RCN ISTAR UAS is part of MDA Space’s broader contributions to maritime domain awareness.

The company also offers maritime insights for global shipping activity awareness and monitoring of non-transmitting vessels.

In addition, MDA’s CHORUS constellation is set to include the Vessel Detection Onboard Processor (VDOP) demonstration, enhancing real-time synthetic aperture radar processing and expediting the dissemination of satellite maritime domain earth observation data.

In June 2025, MDA Space secured C$60m ($43m) contracts for the next phase of work on the River-class destroyer (RCD) programme.
