Ledger Recovery Key – a spare key for your wallet – now available in Australia

Ledger, the world leader in digital asset security for consumers and enterprises, have announced the release of Ledger Recovery Key, a spare key to access your digital assets.

With a Secure Element at its core, the same technology powering Ledger’s uncompromising security for over a decade, Ledger Recovery Key makes wallet recovery simple, so self-custody is even more accessible. Ledger Recovery Key now ships in the box with all Ledger Flex™ and Ledger Stax™ orders, with additional sold separately. For a limited time post-launch, all customers who previously purchased a Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax can claim a complimentary Ledger Recovery Key (shipping payment required).

Following strong tailwinds, crypto adoption is again growing with the total market cap increasing by over $1 Trillion in the past year. In 2024, Ledger launched its next-generation secure touchscreen devices, Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex, and redefined the experience of using a signer. They have contributed to a new sales milestone of over 7.5 million Ledger devices sold worldwide.

With the world’s first secure touchscreens and beautiful E Ink displays, Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex make verifying transactions and securely interacting with decentralized applications crystal clear. But in a changing world, where traditional backup methods are becoming less practical, users also need modern options to maintain access to their wallets, while preserving self-custody.

Ledger Recovery Key makes recovering access to your digital assets as easy as tapping a card and entering a PIN. Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax users can now create a secure spare key alongside their 24 words, and a Ledger Recovery Key is included in the box of every new order of Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex. It connects directly to your Ledger using secure NFC wireless channels, with no intermediary. Within minutes you can create an always-offline spare key to your digital assets, protected by its own PIN code, on secure, durable hardware.

“Ledger not only brings the best in security but the best and fullest set of choices around recovery,” said Ian Rogers, Chief Experience Officer at Ledger. “With Ledger Recovery Key we are making secure self-custody easy-to-use for everyone. Too many people are compromising by keeping their assets on exchanges and insecure software wallets.  With Ledger Recover and now Ledger Recovery Key, as well as the traditional 24-words, we are proud to offer a recovery solution for every category of user!”

Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex ship with a single Ledger Recovery Key for simple backup and recovery, but additional cards can be purchased separately to create multiple spare keys. There is no limit to the number of spare keys that can be created. Creating a spare key is always optional, and can only be created by you with confirmation on your Ledger.

Ledger Recovery Key adds to the growing suite of recovery options designed to provide peace of mind for every kind of user. These features remain optional, with the 24 words and interoperability still at the core of the wallet recovery functionality. But an ever-growing user base, with different needs, backgrounds, and circumstances requires optionality. That’s why we’ve added Ledger Recovery Key, and previously Ledger Recover, powered by Coincover.

Ledger launched Ledger Recover in 2023 for those who wanted peace of mind in addition to their traditional written backup. Ledger Recover is an optional paid service that allows users to create encrypted fragments of their recovery phrase, which are protected by and recovered from secure HSMs in different territories. Users can recover access to their wallet by verifying their Identity on the Ledger Live app. Since launching, Ledger Recover adoption has been strong, showing a clear demand for more recovery options.

“We’re delighted to launch Ledger Recovery Key with reviewable code and a whitepaper, as part of our commitment to transparency,” said Charles Guillemet, Chief Technology Officer at Ledger. “It has gone through extensive security testing internally at the hands of the Donjon, our world-leading team of white hat hackers, as well as a comprehensive internal testing and external security audits. We’ve received extremely positive feedback from security researchers and industry leaders, and we’re excited for you to finally get your hands on it!”

The physical Recovery Key and the managed service Ledger Recover are complementary: you can use either, or both, or just your 24-words, depending on how you use your Ledger and what gives you peace of mind.

Ledger Recovery Key ships starting today for all new Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex orders, and additional cards are available to purchase separately on Ledger.com for $39.99. For a limited time post-launch, all customers who previously purchased a Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax can claim a complimentary Ledger Recovery Key (shipping payment required).
