Google is rolling out the ‘Preferred Sources’ feature for its Search. As the name suggests, this allows users to curate search results and lets them pick specific or preferred sources. These can be your favorite sports blog or local newspaper. You will start seeing them more prominently when using Google Search. These sources can be a particular news outlet or a certain blog. Google started testing the feature in June.

Google Search gets a preferred sources feature

Google’s Preferred Sources will be available in English for users in the US and India. This is a pretty straightforward feature. You go to Google and search for something, and then tap on the starred icon to the right of the Top Stories header. Here you can type in the name of the publication or website that you would like to show up and then refresh your results.

These sources will show up in the “top stories” or “from your sources” section when you search. Given that the sources have new articles or posts that are relevant to your search. These sources will be clearly labeled and will appear in addition to other results in ‘Top Stories’.

Having too many sources defeats the purpose

There’s no limit to the number of sources you can choose. However, picking too many negates the purpose of the feature. These sites will be your favorites on the same account. Users who have participated in the Lab tests should continue to see their source preferences. This is a great way to absorb news from the sources you trust the most. You can rely on this feature rather than having multiple news apps on your phone.

This development comes at a time when studies say that Google AI Summaries are killing traditional clicks. It is said that AI summaries offer sufficient answers, resulting in users ending their sessions sooner.
