About the FDP

Indian literature, in its vast oral and written traditions, holds centuries of accumulated wisdom—philosophical, scientific, ethical, and cultural—that reflects the core of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). These indigenous knowledge systems are embedded not only in Sanskrit and classical texts, but also in regional literatures, tribal oral traditions, folk narratives, and vernacular philosophies. However, colonial education policies and epistemological hierarchies often sidelined these knowledge systems, replacing them with Eurocentric frameworks of knowledge, justice, and rationality.

In the postcolonial era, there is an urgent need to revisit these sidelined narratives and reclaim literature as a powerful medium for decolonisation and social transformation. Literature can act as both a preserver and a transmitter of indigenous knowledge, capable of resisting hegemonic ideologies and promoting social justice by giving voice to the marginalised.

This Faculty Development Programme (FDP) will explore the intersection of Indian literature and Indian Knowledge Systems with an emphasis on how decolonising literary narratives can contribute to the quest for social justice. It aims to equip participants with critical tools to engage with literary texts—ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary—from decolonial and indigenous perspectives. Through interactive lectures, scholarly discussions, and hands-on pedagogical sessions, this FDP will foster interdisciplinary understanding and inspire curricular innovations aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
