Not unlike the full month of August, monthly option expiration day and week has a rather meager track record since 1982. Monthly options expiration day has seen DJIA, S&P 500 and NASDAQ advance a little better than 50% of the time, but average performance is negative. Monthly options expiration week has been mixed. DJIA has been the weakest advancing just 44.2% of the time with an average loss of 0.003%. While S&P 500 and NASDAQ have logged average gains of 0.19% and 0.33% respectively and advancing more often than declining. However, the week after has been generally bullish with DJIA, S&P 500 and NASDAQ all advancing greater than 62% of the time and average gains ranging from 0.34% by DJIA to 0.67% from NASDAQ.
