Utica, New York has seen a rise of an ATM check scam. Now, the Utica Police Department is warning people to be aware of this scam, where someone asked an individual to deposit a check for them and withdraw money, according to a report by WKTV.

With this scam, the check is fraudulent and the thief steals the money directly from the victim’s account.

“Please do not deposit checks for people you do not know, especially ones that approach you at an outside ATM,” the Utica Police Department stated in a Facebook post. “These cases are very difficult to investigate as these suspects are often from out of the area, driving vehicles that are rentals or have switched license plates.”
