UK MoD awards submarine in-service support contract to LR

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded Lloyd’s Register (LR) a 12-month in-service submarine support contract via the Aurora Framework.

LR is a London-based organisation is known for its classification and compliance services in the marine and offshore industries worldwide.

The company will dispatch surveyors to His Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde to assist the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.

Additionally, LR will supply strategic advice from MoD Abbey Wood, ensuring a combination of local and technical support.

This agreement builds on several years of collaborative efforts between LR and the MoD and cements LR’s role in the ongoing maintenance of submarine safety and readiness within the Royal Navy.

The partnership presents a potential to apply class-based assurance practices to naval submarine support, introducing a “new level” of thoroughness in an area that “operates outside class rules”.

LR global nuclear and naval submarines, segment director Matthew Palmer said: “This contract represents a major step forward in our mission to support the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. By embedding experts within the Royal Navy’s operating environment, LR is now uniquely positioned to help shape future submarine support frameworks.

“As we continue to support some of the world’s most complex maritime defence platforms, this milestone reinforces our position as a trusted partner for naval safety, capability and resilience.”

In a separate development, LR has secured authorisation from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to certify remotely operated and uncrewed vessels (ROUVs) under Annex 2 of the Workboat Code Edition 3 (WBC3).
