TikTok company is working on its own XR glasses: report

It looks like the TikTok parent, ByteDance, is looking to get into the XR race. Sources close to the matter have told The Information that the company is developing a mixed reality device that looks like goggles. According to the leak, the goggles will reportedly be tethered to a puck that will double as its power source, similar to the Apple Vision Pro or Samsung/Google’s Project Moohan.

Further, ByteDance’s goggles will reportedly have specialized chips to minimize latency between what the users see and their physical environment.

The report indicates that ByteDance hasn’t confirmed the device’s final design and specifications. However, the report suggests these goggles will compete against the Meta Phoenix project. Both devices are rumoured to have a similar size and shape to the Bigscreen Beyond headset, which is called the world’s smallest VR headset, and weighs only 107g.

Although it’s worth mentioning that it looks like there will be a competition for the upcoming Snap Spectacles.

ByteDance will also get assistance from other Chinese suppliers for development. Further, the report indicates that ByteDance had been considering a device to compete against the Vision Pro, but instead went for something more lightweight. This could possibly explain the battery puck.

It’s unclear when ByteDance will officially launch its upcoming MR goggles, but the sooner, the better if it wants to compete with the smart glasses coming from Meta, Snap, and Google.
