Thieves target elderly victims with ATM scam in NYC

Thieves have stolen thousands of dollars from elderly victims in New York City with ATM scams. During these incidents, a thief will distract a victim and swap out their bank card with a fake one, according to a report by CBS News.

In the most recent incident, Penny Zorn, 93 was using an ATM but it was malfunctioning. A man approached her and said the machine didn’t work and to try a different one. He then swapped out her card with a fake one and watched her as she entered her PIN number. From there, he allegedly stole $1,500.

There have been at least three thefts using these methods, with loses up to nearly $24,000.

Video footage of the suspects has been released and the NYPD is investigating.
