Exail to deliver navigation systems for Hellenic Navy’s FDI frigates

France’s Naval Group has chosen Exail to deliver advanced navigation systems for the Hellenic Navy’s next-generation Defence and Intervention Frigates (FDI).

The agreement will see Exail equip the frigate with the Marins inertial navigation system (INS), Netans data distribution unit (DDU), and Gecdis-W warship electronic chart display and information system (WECDIS).

These systems will be integrated into the frigates’ sophisticated, cybersecure digital framework.

The Marins INS offers precise, high-performance inertial sensing for accurate navigation, while the Netans DDU ensures reliable and efficient data sharing across the ship’s systems, maintaining operational integrity even in contested scenarios, according to the company.

The Gecdis-W WECDIS provides advanced tactical electronic chart display and navigation functionalities, adhering to the latest STANAG standards.

Exail sales manager Pierre-Louis Roudaut said: “The selection of Exail’s navigation systems for the Hellenic Navy’s FDI frigates reflects our commitment to delivering reliable and cybersecure solutions that address the evolving challenges of naval operations.

“We are proud to support the Hellenic Navy with proven technology that enhances operational confidence and security.”

This contract extends the ongoing partnership between Exail and Naval Group, following the successful implementation of Exail’s navigation systems on the French Navy’s FDI frigates.

The Hellenic Navy’s FDI frigates are designed as multi-role vessels capable of conducting various missions, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, as well as supporting special operations.

They are equipped with advanced combat systems and a cyber-resilient digital infrastructure to operate effectively in challenging environments.

In May 2025, Naval Group began sea trials for HS Kimon, the first FDI frigate for the Hellenic Navy, at its Lorient shipyard.

The initial phase of the trials focuses on evaluating platform systems, including propulsion and navigation. A second phase will assess the vessel’s combat systems and endurance at sea.
