SanuPay, a third-party payment processor, partnered with digital payments provider OpenWay to introduce a credit card in Ethiopia. Powered by the OpenWay Way4 platform, SanuPay will issue 4 million debit and prepaid cards, and 5,000 Visa and Mastercard credit cards in the country, according to a press release.

Oromia Bank plans to issue the first credit cards with the companies. Customers will also have access to 10,000 POS terminals and 200 ATMs running on the Way4 platform. The National Bank of Ethiopia will support the infrastructure through the payment system operator SantimPay.

“We have selected the best-in-class solution to provide best-in-class payment services in Ethiopia,” Alfred Gachaga, CEO at SanuPay, said in the release. “Partnering with OpenWay and deploying Way4 enables a resilient, scalable, and compliant infrastructure that supports Africa’s digital financial transformation.”

“This collaboration with SanuPay reflects our commitment to empowering innovative financial institutions across Africa,” Hermann Mike, regional director, Sub-Saharan Africa, at OpenWay, said in the release. “Way4 enables Ethiopia’s first domestic credit card while laying the foundation for a modern, inclusive, and interoperable payments landscape.”
