ETFs is a sector of the overall market, the S&P 500, that include a focused genre of companies. For example, the XLK ETF or Sector is full of stocks/companies that have their focus on technology – such as Apple or Google. 

So if you are interested in investing in technology but aren’t sure which exact company to invest in, you can always invest in the full sector, which includes all technology companies.

An Index Fund is a little more spread out and broad, it has a wide range and mix of different types of stocks.
