5G plans return to Koodo

Telus-owned Koodo finally brought back 5G plans over a year after the company killed them.

As of July 24, 2025, Koodo’s website now lists almost all plans as having 5G data speed. Previously, most plans were limited to 4G speeds, though some options were (and still are) limited to 3G speeds.

Alongside the return of 5G plan speeds, Koodo updated its ‘Pick Your Perk’ options to bring back its 5G speed boost option, which doubles Koodo’s 5G speed cap from 250Mbps to 500Mbps. Koodo also added a special back-to-school perk that offers 10GB of bonus data.

Surprisingly, Koodo didn’t really change its plans, with most offering the same amount of data at the same price as before. Aside from 5G speed, the biggest overall change was the addition of international texting (Koodo previously only offered Canada-wide texting with international texting available as a free perk).

Here are Koodo’s current plans with 5G (note all prices include a $10/mo discount for doing automatic bank payments):

  • $40/10GB
  • $45/40GB
  • $50/60GB
  • $75/100GB (previously $60/100GB)

Koodo launched its first 5G-capable plans back in August 2023. Almost a year later, in May 2024, the company inexplicably removed all of its 5G plans, offering only 4G plans instead. Notably, the removal didn’t impact customers who already had 5G plans, and existing customers continued to have access to 5G options through Koodo’s self-serve portal. New customers, however, only had 4G options available to them.

Weirdly, Koodo’s 4G and 5G plans really only impact the data speed. Customers were still able to connect to Telus’ 5G network as long as they were in a 5G service area and had a 5G-capable device. But customers who paid for a 4G plan would only get up to 100Mbps data speeds, which is Koodo’s arbitrary choice on how fast 4G is.

Koodo stands out now as one of the few Big Three flanker brands offering 5G service. Bell-owned Virgin Plus briefly offered 5G plans but, like Koodo, eventually stopped offering them. Rogers-owned Fido never offered 5G plans, and Rogers said last year it had “no plans to migrate Fido to our 5G network.”

Fellow Telus flanker brand Public Mobile does offer 5G plans, while Bell’s Lucky Mobile and Rogers’ Chatr don’t offer 5G plans. But with 5G returning to Koodo, maybe we’ll see Virgin and Fido start to offer 5G soon as well.
