Money continues to be one of the leading causes of Marriage troubles. It’s an uncomfortable topic (my stomach turns a little each time I talk about it) but ultimately an important one!

Here are 5 common ways that money causes issues in a marriage:

Lack of Transparency

Lack of Transparency, also known as financial infidelity, can present itself in a few ways. Maybe a spouse is hiding money, spending money in excess without sharing that with their spouse, or just general deceit when it comes to money. This causes a lack of trust between spouses that can be hard to overcome.

Materialism

Materialism isn’t what you might think! It’s not the saver vs. spender trope we often hear about. The deeper issue that makes this more problematic, doesn’t even have to do with your income as a couple. Rather the couples view on money. If both spouses identify as materialistic, they rank at the bottom of successful couples.

Power Imbalances

Power imbalances refer mostly to control. Sometimes one person in the pair takes control of money, budgeting, etc. Maybe one of you come to the relationship with tons of debt. This sort of imbalance between a couple can be really hard to overcome without communication.

Priority Disagreements

Disagreeing about when and where to spend your money can be difficult! For example, travel. Some spouses may desire a ton of adventure. The other may simply think it’s a waste of money. Even more important topics like schooling for children, locations to purchase a home, can cause friction if not worked through. You don’t have to agree but compromising can get you in a better place.

Family Issues

Family issues can stem from what you spend on your kids, whether they are young or old. Are you going to financially support your kids after they are of age? More often that not, I see that parents are rarely on the same page. Determining what types of support you want to provide for family and children is imperative to keeping a healthy marriage.
