How generative AI & deepfakes threaten financial institutions

  • Video Deepfakes for Identity Fraud: A growing threat is the use of video deepfakes to fool identity verification systems during remote customer onboarding. By using a deepfake to pass “liveness” checks, criminals can open accounts using synthetic or stolen identities, paving the way for large-scale fraud and money laundering. 

Defending against AI-powered deception

Fighting AI-driven attacks requires a multi-layered strategy that assumes deception is the new default.

  1. Technological Defenses: Institutions must move beyond traditional email filters. Modern solutions that use AI to analyze communication patterns, sender reputation, and linguistic intent are better equipped to spot sophisticated, AI-generated phishing. For identity verification, advanced biometric systems that can detect the subtle tells of a deepfake are becoming essential.
  2. Procedural Defenses: Robust, non-negotiable processes are critical. Mandate multi-person approval for any large or unusual financial transaction. Crucially, enforce a policy of out-of-band verification—confirming a request via a separate, trusted communication channel (like calling a known phone number or contacting the person via a different platform) before taking action.
  3. Human Defenses: The human firewall is more important than ever. Security awareness training must be updated to specifically address AI threats. Employees must be taught to be highly skeptical of any request that imparts a sense of urgency or deviates from normal procedure, no matter how authentic the sender sounds or appears.

Generative AI and deepfakes have permanently lowered the barrier to entry for high-impact cyberattacks on the financial sector. The effectiveness of these tools in creating deception means that security leaders must foster a culture of healthy skepticism, supported by advanced technology and rigid procedural controls. The arms race between offensive and defensive AI has begun, and preparing for the dark side of this technology is no longer optional—it’s essential for survival.
