May 2025 blend of links

Spread the love

Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.

12:01・Described as an “anti-disciplinary creative studio,” 12:01 is the creation of Hassan Rahim. I followed Rahim for years on Tumblr, Instagram, and Twitter (before deleting all my accounts); this is how I know him (social media is really great sometimes). The website itself is, for me, one of the best examples of what a website can be: a window into the mind of the artist (great playlist too).

“I’m the Problem; It’s Me”: On the Confession the Mainstream Media Won’t Make・“The mainstream media are extremely fond of ‘what went wrong’ stories that do not include themselves […]” (via Dan Gillmor)

Ricoh GR IV・Like Samuel Lintaro Hopf, I will probably wait for a tighter focal length GRIVx to consider replacing my beloved GR IIIx, but it’s nice to see Ricoh working on something new, and it’s the kind of news that instantly makes me go “I should start saving to buy it as soon as it’s released.” With the Nintendo Switch 2 just around the corner, Japanese companies are attracting a lot of my purchase intentions these days…

The Archive, v1.9・One of my favourite apps got a very interesting update recently. Auto-completion of hashtags may not be a worth-writing-about feature, but this is — I think — a big deal for The Archive and its purpose as a single repository to take and organise notes. I really want to find a spot for The Archive in my personal or professional set of apps, somewhere between BBEdit and Things.

What happened to www.?・A great conversation starter for internet nerds. (via Kushaiah Felisilda)

You Can’t Even Watch A Movie Anymore Without Seeing Some Theme Explored・“I don’t like when your movie shows me various points of view that paint a fuller picture of the story. I just want to enjoy a movie for what it is, and that’s a random array of completely unrelated moving images that evoke absolutely nothing inside me.

Bees & Friends・Fantastic marketing and fantastic video (via Kottke)

Jony Ive: How it started & how it’s going・This post on Mastodon by BasicAppleGuy, on the Jony Ive / Sam Altman announcement, made me laugh louder than expected.

Fowl play: flying duck caught in Swiss speed trap believed to be repeat offender・“Image shows mallard snapped at 52km/h in same 30km/h zone as a duck on the same day seven years ago.

Aaliyah, Aaliyah’s 2001 album・I recently realised that this year will mark the 24th anniversary of Aaliyah’s tragic death, and I frowned a little when I told myself “this album cannot be 24 years old!” More Than A Woman, We Need A Resolution, and Try Again are surely among the best productions from Timbaland, which says lot. The way they sounded in 2001 was incredible and they still sound like nothing else. I also realise that less time had passed between the release of the original Star Wars movie and this album than between this album and this day.
