Tuvalu, a nation in Oceania, revealed its first ATMs ever. The National Bank of Tuvalu unveiled the ATMs at Vaikaku on the main island of Funafuti, according to a report by The Guardian.
Tuvalu is an almost entirely cash based economy, which lead to long lines at the bank as workers lined up to withdraw their salaries. These ATMs are aimed at modernizing the country’s financial system.
“We’ve been in an analogue space all along, these were dreams for us,” Prime Minister Feleti Teo, said in the In a keynote speech. “These machines don’t come cheap. But with government support and sheer determination, we were able to roll out this service for our people.”
The bank contracted Pacific Technologies Ltd. to install the ATMs at multiple spots on Funafuti. The company installed five ATMs in total and plans to also roll out 30 POS terminals.
The bank will also provide debit cards in the future.
