Moving Stocks between Watchlists (or Portfolios)

(Side note: I’ve been looking for an excuse to try ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities, so I asked it to generate an image for this blog post.  I didn’t go into much detail with my prompting because I just wanted to see what it would create — that’s the image above. Interesting times!)

I got an email asking how to move multiple stocks from one watchlist to another.  There’s not a way to do that for multiple stocks in one shot but you can transfer them one at a time.  As I mentioned at the end of the “Managing Your Watchlists” blog post in 2023:

Another thing I wanted to point out is that Duru wanted to remove a stock from his “to buy” watchlist and put it on a “to short” list.  He did that by deleting the stock and then he was going to add it to the other watchlist.  One could also move a stock between watchlists by clicking the edit button on that stock’s row.  Then you can choose the watchlist you want to move it to.

Here’s that edit button/icon:

And here’s the form it takes you to, from which you can choose a different watchlist and/or modify that stock’s note:

You can then use your browser’s back button to go back to the original watchlist to move the next stock.  (Note that your browser will most likely show you the cached {old} version of the watchlist, so you may want to hit the browser’s refresh/reload button.)

All of the above also applies to moving stocks between portfolios… but you can’t use that method to move a stock from a watchlist to a portfolio or vice versa.

Alternatively, depending on the number of stocks you want to move, it may be easier to just delete them and add them all at once to another watchlist — especially if you don’t have notes on the stocks.  As I wrote in another blog post:

Add Multiple Stocks to Wishlists at Once

By popular demand, you can now add multiple stocks to a wishlist in one shot.  On each watchlist’s page you’ll see an “Add Symbols” button.  You can simply enter a comma-delimited list of ticker symbols in the box next to that button.  Clicking the button will add each of the entered tickers into your watchlist (up to your allowed number of stocks per watchlist).

P.S.  Here’s another ChatGPT generated image for this blog post.  It got a little carried away with “edit” in this one 😁:
