The backyard movie theater is a topic that we have covered rather extensively because it’s something that many of us have done at home. The pandemic made it almost impossible for tens of millions of moviegoers to watch anything at an actual movie theater and while it was a huge shot in the arm for the home theater category — spending that much time stuck indoors at home could drive anyone slightly mad. Some brands like XGIMI that offer a wide range of portable projectors took advantage of the opportunity and have done extremely well over the past 5 years. The one thing that was missing from their portfolio was a screen. XGIMI’s Portable Outdoor Screen is a compact, lightweight and extremely affordable option — although we’re somewhat disappointed (actually rather bummed) by its 70-inch size.

The screen assembly only weighs 3.3 lbs and folds down to just 18 inches for storage and transport. It fits easily into a backpack and features a customized storage bag, making it ideal for on-the-go entertainment. An integrated elastic cord design makes setup hassle-free and takes just 60 seconds—perfect for spontaneous movie nights under the stars.

The screen’s aluminum alloy frame is durable, waterproof, rust-resistant, and stable, ensuring reliability in outdoor conditions. The wrinkle-free, washable fabric maintains a smooth, high-quality viewing surface even after folding, while four ground stakes provide extra support and security in various environments.

The XGIMI Portable Outdoor Screen is compatible with long-throw projectors and pairs perfectly with XGIMI’s latest portable model, the MoGo 3 Pro.
MoGo 3 Pro
The MoGo 3 Pro incorporates a compact design (about the size of a coffee cup) and also weighs in at only 2.43 lbs. It features a carrying case and lanyard for easy portability. As a Google TV projector, the MoGo 3 Pro offers native Netflix support alongside other popular streaming apps. With a USB Type-C port for power bank support, it’s great for those who may want to take it with them on vacation or to a secondary home.

The MoGo 3 PRO’s innovative multi-angle base stand not only provides convenience but also serves as a projector switch, powering up the MoGo 3 Pro by rotating it out of the base. Advanced DLP display technology, 1080p resolution, and a 90% DCI-P3 color gamut deliver rich color and clarity.
Standard XGIMI features like auto keystone correction and intelligent obstacle avoidance ensure a quick, easy setup with an optimal viewing experience.
The MoGo 3 Pro also has an ambient light feature. This enables the projector light to move with the music, adding vibrant colors that dance with every note, creating an immersive audio-visual experience.

The Bottom Line
XGIMI has made an interesting marketing move going into the spring and summer – releasing a portable outdoor screen and also offering a comprehensive accessory package for their MoGo 3 Pro portable projector that may attract customers looking for an inexpensive outdoor entertainment option.
Of course, keep in mind that you can use the screen with a wide range of projectors from XGIMI or other brands, and the MoGo 3 Pro can be used with other branded screens as well.
However, that being said, there are two things that should be considered.
At 70 inches, the screen is rather small for an outdoor experience, considering that inside the house, there are a growing number of people that have TVs 75 inches and larger – so dropping down to 70 inches to take your entertainment outside may be a size downgrade. XGIMI should consider, if they haven’t already, offering the screen in several sizes up to 100 inches.
The MoGo 3 Pro projector is certainly an affordable option, and it offers a lot of features, including built-in streaming. However, with only a 450-lumen output, it may struggle to project a bright image, especially on a large screen with outdoor ambient light, but that isn’t necessarily your only projector choice.
XGIMI is a projector maker that offers an increasing number of options over a wide range of price points, and have received an eCoustics CES Best in Show Award for their Ascend Screen/Soundbar combination for UST projectors. They’ve clearly proven that they have the technical capabilities to make products that can work well in unorthodox environments. A larger version of this screen for $150 USD would likely sell out very quickly.
