ALPN is India’s first intersectional think-tank working exclusively on animal law and policy in the country. ALPN was established in October 2023 and formally registered as a not-forprofit company registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 in March 2024.

ALPN’s mission is to drive legal and policy change in India to improve the lives of animals in a manner that fosters respect for the well-being of humans, the environment and animals themselves.

About the Position

ALPN’s work involves conducting data-driven and evidence-based research on issues involving farmed animals in India. Its interdisciplinary and intersectional research is aimed at bringing urgent policy attention to neglected yet pressing issues.

As a Researcher with ALPN, you will be at the forefront of cutting-edge research in this field.

Location

This is a full-time position based out of Bengaluru, Karnataka. This is not a remote position.

Duration

The contract will last for a period of one year and be subject to renewal based on your performance and the availability of funds.

Responsibilities

This section is intended to provide an overview of the key responsibilities of the position of a Researcher at ALPN. However, given the fact that the organisation is in its early stages, candidates must be prepared for some changes in the description of their roles along the way.

Some key responsibilities of a Researcher at ALPN include:

  • Undertaking high quality legal, quantitative and qualitative policy research on issues related to farmed animal law and policy.
  • Engaging with government officials, civil society, academics and relevant stakeholders for ongoing and new projects.
  • Preparing quality reports, research notes, research papers, and presentations.
  • Ideating and executing new projects, including communication outputs and dissemination of those projects.
  • Writing articles, blogs and op-eds, and making explanatory videos on relevant topics.
  • Organising and participating in events, meetings, and consultations with concerned stakeholders for the purpose of ALPN’s work.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate degree in law.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrable work experience in the field of animal welfare, legal and/or policy research, public policy, or any other related field. A postgraduate degree will be counted as one year of work-experience.

Requirements Essential

  • A broad knowledge of animal law as a discipline and issues concerning farmed animals.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work streams with meticulous attention to detail, deadlines, intersections and dependencies.
  • Willingness to travel for work.

Preferred

  • Postgraduate degree in law, ethology, public policy, or other related fields.
  • Experience in interacting with government officials, civil society organisations and academia.
  • Experience in fieldwork, qualitative, and empirical research.
  • Prior publications in journals and newspapers. 

What you can expect from us

  • Remuneration: INR 8-10 lakhs per annum, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Other benefits: In addition to the remuneration, ALPN offers a well-being allowance of Rs. 24,000 per annum to all its full-time staff.
  • Leave Policy: ALPN offers 24 days of paid leave per year.
  • Working days: Monday-Friday with one optional work from home day per week.
  • Working hours: 40 hours per week.
