Apple has faced significant challenges in integrating AI into its ecosystem, particularly with Siri, which lags behind competitors despite advancements in its computing and wearable technology.
While Google and Microsoft have deeply embedded generative AI into their platforms, Apple’s digital assistant remains relatively outdated.
A Bloomberg report highlights that Apple’s efforts to revamp Siri with AI may take until at least 2027, illustrating the slow pace of development in this area.
Currently, Siri operates on a dual-architecture system—one supporting its legacy functions and the other incorporating newer generative AI capabilities similar to ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
However, these two components function separately rather than as a cohesive unit.
Apple plans to merge them with the release of iOS 19, which is expected to be announced at its annual developer conference in June and rolled out as part of the iOS 19.4 update in spring 2026.
Despite this, insiders suggest that significant AI enhancements will not be included in iOS 19, postponing Siri’s full transformation to a more advanced conversational assistant.
Apple is internally working on a project known as “LLM Siri,” which aims to unify Siri’s architecture and enable more advanced AI interactions.
However, this project is reportedly behind schedule, meaning that a fully modernized Siri experience may not arrive until iOS 20, expected in 2027.
The delays stem from several factors, including AI chip shortages, competitor talent poaching, and slow leadership in Apple’s AI division.
Additionally, the fast-paced nature of AI development means that Apple’s advancements often become outdated when they are ready for release.
Apple has progressed, including partnerships with Chinese AI firms Alibaba and Baidu.
However, these collaborations primarily focus on deploying AI in China rather than enhancing Siri globally.
Meanwhile, competitors like Amazon have already launched substantial upgrades to their AI assistants, putting Apple further behind.
