HP Reinsurance SPC Ltd. (HP Re), a Cayman Islands based reinsurer, and Hale Partnership Capital Advisors has announced the hiring of Matt Walters as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of HP Re, as the firm continues to expand in both the reinsurance and retrocession markets.
For those unaware, HP Re was established by North Carolina investment adviser Hale Partnership Capital Management, a renowned firm across the industry that invests across a range of sectors, in public and private debt or equity opportunities.Walters, who will begin his new duties on April 2nd, joins HP Re after spending his career working at bulge bracket investment banks, having most recently spent the last five years as Group Head of the Syndicated and Acquisition Financing group within Wells Fargo’s Debt Capital Markets business.
With two decades of transaction experience, Walters has led over 850 deals, raising more than $1.8 trillion in capital commitments, including over $500 billion in underwritten financing for strategic transactions.
Among his responsibilities as COO, Walters has been tasked with leading the growth of HP Re by providing innovative solutions to global insurers and reinsurers, diversifying HP Re’s exposure, and driving its expansion in the Loss Portfolio Transfer (LPT) market.
Steve Hale, Chairman of HP Re, commented on Walters’ appointment: “Matt’s leadership and proven experience executing complex transactions across various capital markets and geographies will allow HP Re to provide complex and innovative capital solutions while expanding our presence in the reinsurance and retrocession markets.”
Meanwhile, in January, HP Re entered into a $44 million transaction with insurance-linked securities (ILS) manager Elementum Advisors, which saw HP Re assume a portfolio of business underwritten between 2020 and 2022, that was held by portfolios managed by Elementum Advisors, LLC.
The deal represents a strategic expansion for HP Re, highlighting the firm’s growing role in providing solutions for third-party capital providers and ILS fund managers.
