Havok is introducing a new pricing structure aimed at making its solutions more accessible to smaller and indie game development studios.
Under the new pricing structure, game studios with budgets up to $20 million able to leverage technologies from Havok for a one-time fee of $50,000 per game:

This new structure marks a departure from traditional licensing models and could have a major impact on game development, particularly for smaller and indie studios who may have found Havok’s technologies financially out of reach.
“We are excited to announce a new pricing model that makes our industry leading technologies available to a broader range of studios for a per-title fee of $50,000,” explained the company. “Havok technologies are used by most of the world’s largest game franchises, and we are excited to see what a new range of innovative studios will achieve with Havok Physics and Havok Navigation.”
The new licensing model is presented as “straightforward with no royalty” and is available to game companies with per-title budgets up to $20 million. This upper limit suggests that while targeting smaller and mid-sized studios, Havok is still positioning itself as a premium technology provider for a substantial segment of the market.
Furthermore, Havok is keen to cater to developers already embedded within popular game engines. The company highlighted the availability of “plug-in versions of Havok Physics and Havok Navigation for Unreal Engine.”
This new pricing model offers several key advantages for game development studios:
- Democratising access: Studios can now “use the full Havok feature set that powers many of the leading franchises in the industry” without the burden of ongoing royalty payments, provided their per-title budget falls within the specified range.
- Multi-platform support: The license allows developers to “ship on console, PC, and mobile,” providing flexibility in their target platforms.
- Up-to-date technology: Studios will have “access to the latest Havok technology throughout title development,” ensuring they are working with the most advanced tools available.
- Customisation: For Unreal Engine users, the ability to “build and modify the Havok Unreal Engine plugins” offers a high degree of customisation and control over the integration.
The new pricing strategy from Havok appears to be aimed towards capturing a segment of the game development market that might find certain subscription or royalty models less appealing or cost-effective for their specific needs. By offering a one-time fee for a specific title, Havok is providing a more predictable cost structure for crucial middleware components.
