Anthropic’s new AI web search summarizes info, challenges Google

Anthropic has introduced a new AI-powered web search feature. This feature is based on its Claude 3.7 Sonnet model and allows users to get more informative search results directly within the chatbot instead of just being given a list of website links like Google.

This means that when users ask a question, they receive a detailed response with summarized information from the web and sources.

The feature is currently available only to paid users in the US, but it will expand to more people later.

OpenAI launched a similar AI search tool in late 2024, initially available only to paid users but now accessible to everyone. While Anthropic has strong ties to Google, it recently partnered with Google One Premium to preview its AI-powered features.

Businesses and researchers can use it to analyze industry trends or prepare grant proposals. On a more everyday level, it could help shoppers compare prices more efficiently by pulling together information from different sources into one place.

Before AI search tools existed, people had to use both search engines and chatbots separately, for example, looking up information on Google and then copying details into AI chatbots for further explanation.

Now, AI-powered web search combines both steps, making it faster and easier to find information.

However, as more AI companies compete in this space, concerns about AI continue to rise.

As noted by folks over at Android Headlines: OpenAI developed ChatGPT search to compete with Google, Google developed its AI search to keep up with ChatGPT, and now Anthropic is doing the same.

This constant race means AI search tools are becoming dominant, reducing the number of visitors to traditional websites.

A recent study found that AI search engines send 96% less traffic to news sites than Google Search because AI summarizes information, so users don’t need to click on original sources as often.
