Empower Oversight sued the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., federal court over its failure to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request involving records in connection to former high-level officials, including William Hinman, now a senior adviser at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
Tristan Leavitt, the president of Empower Oversight, a nonprofit organization that says it is dedicated to strengthening public integrity through research, education and the help of whistleblowers, said the SEC claimed that the records were near completion over one year ago. However, the agency ignored subsequent follow-up requests. Â
