Meta is undertaking a groundbreaking undersea cable project called Project Waterworth, designed to connect five continents over a distance of more than 50,000 kilometers. This ambitious initiative will be the world’s longest undersea cable project using advanced technology and providing high-capacity connectivity for regions such as the United States, India, Brazil and South Africa.
Project Waterworth aims to promote economic growth, digital inclusion and technological advancement in these key regions. In India, for example, where digital infrastructure is rapidly expanding, this project will accelerate progress and support the country’s ambitious digital economy goals. Submarine cables are the foundation of global digital infrastructure, handling more than 95% of intercontinental traffic across oceans. They enable seamless digital communications, video experiences, online transactions and much more.
Project Waterworth, a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year project, will increase the scale and reliability of global digital networks by building three new ocean corridors equipped with high-speed connectivity essential for driving AI innovation worldwide. Over the past decade, Meta has worked with various organisations to advance infrastructure innovation, developing more than 20 undersea cables, including multiple deployments of industry-leading cables with 24 fiber pairs, exceeding the typical eight to 16 fibre pairs of other new systems.
Meta is at the forefront of developing innovative technologies, particularly in the field of AI, which is revolutionising several aspects of our lives, including infrastructure development. As AI continues to transform industries and societies worldwide, capacity, resilience and global reach are paramount in supporting advanced infrastructure. Project Waterworth enables Meta to ensure that the benefits of AI and emerging technologies are accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or work environment.
