The Humane AI Pin, a $699 AI-powered wearable launched in April 2024, faced significant challenges from the outset.
The device failed to meet expectations, delivering a subpar experience that fell short of its ambitious promises.Â
The hardware itself was flawed, compounding these issues. In June 2024, Humane issued a safety warning to all 37 AI Pin owners, advising them to stop using the bundled charging case due to a potential fire hazard.
HP ended up acquiring Humane for $116 million. Humane initially aimed for a buyout between $750 million and $1 billion but settled for much less than it had raised from investors.
However, the deal explicitly excludes Humane’s AI wearable business. Instead, HP gains access to Humane’s intellectual property, engineering talent, and CosmOS, the software powering the AI Pin.Â

HP takes over Humane, but not for its AI pins
Following the acquisition, Humane announced an immediate discontinuation of AI Pin sales. Moreover, all AI Pins sold to date will cease functioning after February 28, 2025.Â
While offline features may continue working, online services—including AI capabilities and calling—will be permanently disabled, rendering the device nearly useless.Â
Humane says they’re offering refunds to customers still within their 90-day return period, though only upon request. Additionally, the company will issue prorated refunds for its subscription service.Â
People who bought the AI Pin soon after it came out might feel left out and unappreciated because they won’t get their money back. This decision could make early supporters unhappy, as they expected continued device support.
As part of the shutdown, Humane will erase all user data stored on its servers on February 28, 2025. Users should export their saved photos, videos, and notes from Humane’s online portal before that deadline.Â
Furthermore, after February 28, 2025, Humane will not replace the recalled charging case but will instead offer affected users a partial refund.
