Elon Musk announced Grok 3, the latest iteration of xAI’s chatbot, highlighting its significantly enhanced capabilities over its predecessor. This unveiling coincides with ongoing tensions between Musk and OpenAI, marked by legal disputes, public confrontations and a recent proposed takeover bid by Musk.
During a live video presentation, Musk and his team outlined the goal of xAI and Grok: to decipher the fundamental nature of the universe. The discussion began with performance benchmarks, insights into xAI’s newly established data center and aspirations for a chatbot free of political constraints. Musk and xAI claimed that Grok 3 has advanced reasoning skills and will continuously evolve through reinforcement learning.
Demonstrations showed how Grok 3 solved a physics problem and generated a game that combined elements of Bejeweled and Tetris. Musk shared his experience playing an earlier iteration based on this prompt and described it as “pretty good.”
The Grok 3 API will be released soon. A premium “SuperGrok” subscription gives users enhanced access to Grok’s features. An abbreviated version of the reasoning model is also available. Grok 3 introduces DeepSearch, characterized as both a new search engine and an early version of agent-like functionality.
However, xAI acknowledged that Grok 3’s reasoning model is in the beta phase and undergoing ongoing training. Musk emphasized the expectation of initial imperfections and suggested that users would be better off waiting for a more refined version. The planned voice mode, originally intended for launch, has been delayed to further refine that feature.
