It’s 2025, and Discord just rolled out a new Ignore button feature to help users quietly distance themselves from unwanted interactions without notifying the other party. `
This feature is especially helpful for teens who might not want to deal with the drama of blocking someone outright.
With the Ignore feature, you can quietly keep unwanted people at bay on Discord without any of the fuss that comes with it.
What does the ignore button do in Discord?
In a blog post released before Safer Internet Day, Discord highlighted that the Ignore button was developed in response to user feedback.
Core to our work is providing a variety of controls and settings to give our users choice in their experience on Discord,” the blog post writes. “Rolling out globally today, we’re excited to introduce a new feature in our safety toolbox designed to help manage your social boundaries in a gentler way: Ignore.
With Ignore, you can take space from specific peoplwe without them knowing, so you can stay focused on the fun. Whether you just need some time away or want to take a more discreet route, Ignore lets you personalize your approach.
Many people, particularly teens, expressed concern that blocking someone outright could escalate conflicts or lead to negative consequences outside Discord.
By allowing users to mute interactions without alerting the other person, the platform hopes to create a safer and more comfortable environment.
Before introducing this feature, blocking was the only way to prevent unwanted interactions on Discord.
However, users often felt blocking was too direct and could lead to retaliation or uncomfortable confrontations.
The Ignore button provides an alternative by allowing users to temporarily hide messages and notifications from a specific individual without that person knowing.
How to use Discord’s new Ignore button
To use DIscord’s new Ignore button, follow these steps:
-
Navigate to your direct messages (DMs) with the person you are trying to ignore.
-
Tap on the person’s profile picture
-
Open the dropdown menu in the upper-right corner and select Ignore
-
Tap on their profile picture, open the dropdown menu in the upper-right corner, and select Ignore.
-
A confirmation pop-up will appear, reading: “Ignore [username]? Get space without letting them know.”
Once confirmed, all new messages, DMs, and notifications from that person will be hidden indefinitely.
Not only does it allow users to manage their interactions discreetly, but it also protects them from potential scammers.
Additionally, users who experience harassment or abuse can still report the offender to Discord’s support team, who may take disciplinary action.
In short, Discord’s new Ignore button makes it easy to avoid unwanted chats without the drama of blocking. It’s perfect for teens looking to keep things chill and stay safe online.
This update shows Discord is listening to its users and making the platform a better place for everyone.
