Thieves stole more than $100,000 from the ATM Tree, operated by Greenfield Savings Bank in Greenfield, Massachusetts. This 25-foot-tall ATM was built by artist Thor Holbek and features an overhanging mushroom, according to a report by the Greenfield Recorder.
The suspects used a Ford pickup truck to pull the front from the ATM with a chain and steal the cash cartridges. Police Chief Todd Dodge believes the individuals that carried this out knew what they were doing.
“One of the chains they used to hook to the ATM to pull the door off actually got wrapped around a pole, so the truck actually got stuck. So, when they arrived, they found the truck doors open, running, but unoccupied and the money and suspects gone,” Dodge said in the report. “It seems like a second vehicle arrived shortly after that truck got stuck and they were seen running from it. A second vehicle pulls up on Mohawk Trail and it appears these individuals got in it and they [fled].”
The ATM was smashed in the attack and the tree was damaged as well. The investigation is ongoing.
