The Trump Administration announced plans to offer thousands of federal workers eight months of pay for ‘deferred resignations’ this week and it looks like a plan is in place to maintain impacted services: let ChatGPT handle it.

OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT Gov, a specialised version of their popular language model designed specifically for US government agencies.

ChatGPT Gov provides government agencies with a secure and controlled environment to use OpenAI’s advanced capabilities within their existing Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. This self-hosted approach allows agencies to tailor security, privacy and compliance measures to meet stringent requirements such as IL5, CJIS, ITAR and FedRAMP High standards.

The platform provides a range of features similar to ChatGPT Enterprise, including the ability to store and share conversations, upload text and image files, and use GPT-4o for tasks such as text summaries, encoding and image analysis. Agencies can also create and share custom GPT models within their government workspace, making the system even more responsive to their specific needs. A management console allows IT teams to manage user access, groups, custom models, single sign-on (SSO) and other essential functions.

This initiative reflects OpenAI’s commitment to supporting government agencies in harnessing the power of AI. Ongoing efforts include pursuing FedRAMP Moderate and High accreditations for ChatGPT Enterprise and exploring expansion of ChatGPT Gov to Azure’s classified regions.

ChatGPT’s impact is already being felt in various government sectors. More than 90,000 users from more than 3,500 federal, state and local agencies have used ChatGPT to streamline tasks and improve operations. Examples include the Air Force Research Laboratory, which uses ChatGPT Enterprise for administrative tasks such as improving internal access to resources and supporting AI education initiatives. Los Alamos National Laboratory is using it for scientific research and innovation, while the Bioscience Division is exploring the potential of GPT-4o for safe use in laboratories to advance life science research.

The State of Minnesota’s Enterprise Translations Office is using ChatGPT Team to provide faster and more accurate translation services to multilingual communities and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also conducted a pilot programme in which employees using ChatGPT Enterprise reported a significant reduction in time spent on routine tasks.
