Man pleads guilty to Wyoming ATM jackpotting scheme

32 year old Victor Gustavo Da Rocha Reyes has pled guilty to conspiracy to commit theft as part of an ATM jackpotting scheme in Gillette, Wyoming. Authorities discovered that a group was traveling to Gillette for this scheme after stealing more than $50,000 from a Highmark Federal Credit Union ATM and $100,000 from a Wells Fargo ATM in South Dakota, according to a report by Gillette News Record.

With this attack, the culprits planned to use programmable cards and malware via a Raspberry Pi to trick the ATM into withdrawing cash. Reyes was allegedly working with six men via WhatsApp to carry out the scheme.

At one particular ATM in Gillette, the ATM denied the withdrawal transaction. When police investigated the ATM they found a device plugged into it via Ethernet.

Reyes’ sentencing is set for Feb. 27.
