Donald Trump Jr’s plane lands in Greenland: airport video

Donald Trump Jr arrived Tuesday in Greenland for a private visit to the Danish autonomous territory coveted by his father and which hopes to one day be independent.

The visit comes weeks after his father, US President-elect Donald Trump, suggested Washington annex the autonomous Danish territory.

Video footage from Nuuk’s airport showed a Boeing 757 emblazoned with the word “Trump” landing shortly before 1300 GMT on the runway in the capital of the Arctic territory.

“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” the president-elect wrote on Truth Social on Monday, after reiterating before Christmas that he wanted the United States to take control of the island.

This is not the first time Trump has shown an interest in Greenland, where the United States already has a military base.

He said he wanted to buy it in 2019, during his first term as president, an offer quashed by Greenland and Denmark.

On the social media platform Rumble, Donald Trump Jr said he would be visiting Nuuk but not to “buy Greenland”.

The island holds major mineral and oil reserves — though oil and uranium exploration are banned — and has a strategic location in the Arctic highlighted by the US base.

“I will be talking to people. I’m just going there as a tourist,” Trump Jr said, calling it “a long personal day trip”.

Greenlandic media have said he will stay for several hours and no official meetings are scheduled.
