In the U.S., there are three main ATM manufacturers to pick from: Hyosung Innovue, NCR Atleos and Diebold Nixdorf. However, it can be a challenge to gather enough information about what types of features each company provides for ATMs. This ATM manufacturer guide will compare the three companies’ ATMs, including what types of ATMs they offer and their comparative functionality.

Table of Contents

NCR Atleos

Formally known as NCR Corp., this ATM manufacturer spun off into two businesses in October 2023, with NCR Voyix handling digital commerce while NCR Atleos focuses on ATMs.

NCR Atleos provides cash dispending ATMs through its SelfServ 21 series, which has anti-overfill cassettes, up to 60 note bunch capacity, contactless card reader and a 15-inch LCD touch screen. It also runs the surcharge-free ATM network, Allpoint, which has more than 55,000 locations worldwide.

One of its more advanced ATMs is the SelfServe 81, a branch assisted service walk-up ATM that includes an Interactive Teller for remote assistance and Interactive Banker video interactivity. In addition, with the SelfServ 88, customers can deposit cash and pay bills at the drive-thru.

“We deliver over 130 transactions globally, many software driven. Core ATM hardware features and enhanced capabilities include cash and/or check dispense and deposits, cash recycling, contactless authentication, loan/utility payments, card printing & issuance, check cashing to the penny, video enabled ITMs, and more,” Kevin King, VP of banking hardware for NCR Atleos, said in an email interview.

When asked about innovative features, King pointed to NCR’s ATM Management platform, which helps customers “manage, maintain and run your end-to-end ATM channel efficiently and securely.” He also mentioned the NCR Terminal Handler for ATM transaction processing.

Hyosung Innovue

The ATM manufacturer, formally known as Hyosung Nautilus rebranded to Hyosung Innovue to focus on the larger self-service market in addition to ATMs.

It offers a variety of different ATMs such as:

  • Recycling ATMs.
  • Traditional cash dispensing ATMs.
  • Retail ATMs with cash transmitting and bill pay features.

In particular, Hyosung prides itself on its cash recycling technology.

“Hyosung is a leader in cash automation technology, pioneering ATM recycling in the US and worldwide and continuing to innovate in the area. Our recycling technology is a key feature in our state-of-the-art banking ATMs, providing financial institutions with the tools to drive maximum efficiency in their branch operations,” Bill Budde, VP of banking strategies and solutions at Hyosung Innovue, said in an email interview.

Its most recent recycling innovation is Secure Cash Transfer, which automates much of the process of moving cash from one ATM to another by authentication, counting and storing the cash automatically within a cassette. It also has split cassette technology to provide greater “flexibility for denominations used in an ATM.”

Budde identified other key features including:

  • Check deposit and fraud detection.
  • NFC readers.
  • Whitelisting, data encryption and TPM chips.
  • Multiple language support.

“Our immediate check fraud review is a great new tool to help combat check fraud. Through a real-time integration with a leading check fraud database, we are able to identify many fraudulently deposited checks during the transaction instead of waiting for a nightly batch run to catch them, resulting in significantly fewer fraud opportunities,” Budde said. “We have also introduced recycling functionality in the Retail ATM space, enabling the delivery of a wider range of banking services anywhere an ATM can be placed.”

Diebold Nixdorf

Diebold Nixdorf has proven to be a resilient ATM manufacturer over the years. Despite filing for Chapter 11 and 15 bankruptcy in 2023, it was able to emerge and restructure and has consistently shown profit growth.

Its primary ATM product is the DN series, which has multiple models for a variety of banking needs, including in-the-wall and freestanding models.

Key features include:

  • E-receipt functionality.
  • Biometric and NFC.
  • Can handle up to 300 notes per transaction with recycling engine.
  • 250+ color options.
  • Two-way teller video.
  • Cardless access.
  • Smart sensors

Diebold Nixdorf also provides AllConnect Services, which provides installation, maintenance and managed services. Customers can manage their ATMs through the DN Vynamic Software, which also offers targeted marketing messages at the ATM.

“With Vynamic software, financial institutions can modernize their payments platform; engage with customers through customized marketing at the ATM; maximize availability; enable video teller capabilities; automate processes and reduce the cost of device ownership; provide enhanced security; improve cash supply chain management through cash recycling; migrate transactions to self-service; and enable new functionality utilizing low-code technology that is easily scalable,” Jodi Neiding, VP, Americas Banking Portfolio, Diebold Nixdorf, said in an email interview.

It also utilizes the AllConnect Data Engine to look at “data patterns, trends and leading indicators to identify potential failures and trigger proactive services to mitigate future ATM outages.”

Also of note is that Diebold Nixdorf was the first manufacturer tointegrate Windows 11 IoT Enterprise into its ATMs.
